Handelsminister Robert Zoellik har liksom EU:s handelsminister Pascal Lamy varit styrelseledamot i den Washingtonbaserade nyliberala tankesmedjan Overseas Development Council, som leddes av förre generaldirektören i GATT (föregångaren till WTO) Peter Sutherland. Han är i dag är bas för den amerikanska investmentbanken Goldman och Sachs International, medlem i europeiska Round Table m.m.

Jordbruksminister Ann Veneman har tidigare arbetat i en advokatfirma som specialiserat sig på att företräda agro- och bioteknologibusiness. Hon har varit styrelseledamot i Calgene, ett dotterbolag till Monsanto. Hon har varit medlem i Policy Council of Agriculture och i Food and Trade, två lobbygrupper som finasieras av Monsanto, Cargill, Archer Daniels Midland, Kraft och Nestle´.

Utbildningsminister Rod Paige har ingått ett avtal med Coca Cola om att sätta upp Coca-automater i amerikanska skolor osv!

Det är sådana "demokratiska" företrädare som sköter våra förhandligar i WTO - det finns säkert en och annan mer demokratiskt framtagen representant för folket, men det är amerikanarna som har mest pengar, dvs makt, resurser, bakom sig och därmed bestämmer dagordningen - sådana sanningar har inte "utvecklingen" förmått ändra på - det har "utvecklingen" förmodligen heller aldrig haft som målsättning.

WASHINGTON, D.C., May 13, 2003 – The American Farm Bureau Federation applauded today's decision by the Bush administration, announced by U.S. Trade Representative Robert Zoellick and Agriculture Secretary Ann Veneman, to pursue a case in the World Trade Organization against the European Union's five-year-old moratorium on new approvals of biotech crops.

The EU's "ongoing and illegal" moratorium, noted Stallman, has resulted in lost export markets for U.S. producers and exporters, a slowdown in the adoption of new technologies in the United States and other countries, and increased production and testing costs for U.S. agricultural interests.

Since its implementation in October 1998, the moratorium has cost the United States about $300 million a year in corn exports to EU countries. About a third (35 percent) of the U.S. corn crop is genetically modified, as is about 70 percent of the cotton crop and three-quarters (75 percent) of the soybean crop.

The EU has proposed the use of labeling and traceability rules to replace the moratorium, a move that Stallman said is also inconsistent with WTO rules. "As proposed, the labeling and traceability rules only make the problem worse by erecting new, unscientific barriers to processed food products in addition to agricultural commodities," he said.
